"The artist’s life is frustrating not because the passage is slow, which it often is, but because he imagines it to be fast."

Albert Maltz

Biografia lui Albert Maltz

Albert Maltz was an American playwright, screenwriter, and novelist. Born on October 28, 1908, in New York City, Maltz gained recognition for his work in the entertainment industry during the mid-20th century. He attended Columbia University, where he studied English and philosophy, before pursuing a career in writing. Maltz was associated with the Group Theatre, a theater collective known for its commitment to socially conscious art. His plays and screenplays often explored political and social themes, earning him both critical acclaim and controversy throughout his career. One of Maltz's most notable works is the play "Men in White," which premiered on Broadway in 1933. The play, which focused on the lives and struggles of young doctors, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1934. Maltz continued writing for the theater, but his attention soon turned to screenwriting. He collaborated with legendary director John Ford on films such as "The Iron Horse" (1924) and "When Willie Comes Marching Home" (1950). Maltz's screenplay for "Pride of the Marines" (1945), based on the life of World War II veteran Al Schmid, received an Academy Award nomination. In the late 1940s, Maltz was caught up in the fervor of the McCarthy era and was one of the ten Hollywood writers and directors known as the "Hollywood Ten" who were blacklisted for their alleged communist affiliations. He was charged with contempt of Congress for refusing to answer questions about his political beliefs and associations. Maltz's refusal to cooperate led to a prison sentence and a ban from working in Hollywood for nearly a decade. Despite the blacklisting, Maltz continued to write for the theater under pseudonyms or using other playwrights as fronts. He was eventually able to return to screenwriting in the 1960s, notably working on the 1963 epic film "The Naked and the Dead," based on the novel by Norman Mailer. Maltz continued to be an outspoken advocate for freedom of expression and the rights of artists until his death on April 26, 1985. Today, Albert Maltz is remembered as an influential figure in American drama and screenplay writing, who faced adversity during a tumultuous era in Hollywood history.
