He became the head coach of the men's basketball team at Evansville College (now the University of Evansville) in 1946 and held the position for 31 years until his retirement in 1977. McCutchan transformed the program into a powerhouse, leading the Purple Aces to unprecedented success and elevating them to national recognition.
Under McCutchan's guidance, the University of Evansville basketball team won five NCAA College Division national championships. The Purple Aces triumphed in 1959, 1960, 1964, 1965, and 1971, with McCutchan's unique coaching style and strategic brilliance playing a crucial role in their victories.
