Apart from his acting career, John Gavin was a considered a statesman and diplomat. He served as the United States ambassador to Mexico during the Reagan administration in the 1980s. Gavin was fluent in Spanish and used his skills to improve relations between the United States and Mexico. His diplomatic reputation was further solidified when he was appointed as the Ambassador to the United Kingdom in the 1990s. Gavin's appointment was well-received by both the British and the American public, and he was considered one of the most effective envoys to London in recent history.
