Duane Jones, not Dwaune Jones, was an African-American actor best known for his role in the groundbreaking horror film "Night of the Living Dead" (1968). Born on February 2, 1937, in New York City, Jones grew up in a middle-class family and showed an early interest in the arts. He attended the Sorbonne in Paris, where he studied literature and languages, before returning to the United States to pursue a career in acting.
Jones made his professional debut in the off-Broadway production of "The Blacks" in 1961, which marked the beginning of his successful theater career. He appeared in numerous stage productions throughout the 1960s and became an active member of the American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Connecticut. Notably, he was one of the few African-American actors to play leading roles in Shakespearean plays during this time.
However, it was his role as Ben in "Night of the Living Dead" that catapulted Jones to international fame. Released in 1968, the film was directed by George A. Romero and is now considered a classic of horror cinema. Jones's portrayal of Ben, a resourceful and determined survivor in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, brought much-needed diversity to a genre that had been predominantly white. Despite the film's success, Jones struggled to find film roles in the years that followed, largely due to the racial barriers prevalent in the entertainment industry at the time.
Jones continued to work in theater, appearing in a variety of productions, and also ventured into teaching and directing. He served as a professor of theater at the State University of New York at Old Westbury and directed several stage productions, including an all-black version of "The Island" by Athol Fugard. Tragically, his promising career was cut short when he passed away at the age of 51 on July 22, 1988, due to complications from heart disease.
Despite his relatively short time in the spotlight, Duane Jones made significant contributions to the arts and paved the way for future African-American actors in the horror genre. His portrayal of Ben in "Night of the Living Dead" remains iconic and his legacy as a talented, trailblazing performer lives on.
