Walter Forde was a renowned British film director, screenwriter, actor and producer who had a prolific career in the British film industry. Born on January 16, 1898, in Islington, London, Forde started his career in the entertainment industry as a music hall performer before joining the film industry in the early 1920s. He made his directorial debut in 1923 with the silent film A Southern Maid and went on to direct more than 30 films over the course of his career. Throughout the 1920s and 30s, Forde became one of the most in-demand directors in British cinema, with a string of successful comedies and dramas to his name. He was known for his deft handling of comedic timing and his ability to get the best out of his actors. Some of his most notable works include Rome Express (1932), a murder mystery set aboard a train, and Cheer Up (1936), a musical comedy starring Gracie Fields. Forde's career continued into the post-war era, and he directed a number of successful films in the 1950s and 60s, including the comedy Too Many Crooks (1959) and the drama The Green Man (1956), which was praised for its darkly comic tone. Forde passed away on November 26, 1984, at the age of 86.
