Carl Struve was a Norwegian artist and designer best known for his work in the field of applied arts. Born in the city of Kristiania, now known as Oslo, in 1898, Struve's talent for design was apparent from an early age. He later attended the Statens Kunstindustriskole, now known as the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, where he honed his skills in painting, drawing and printmaking. Struve began his career as an artist in the 1920s and quickly gained recognition for his fresh and innovative designs. He was particularly interested in the fusion of traditional Norwegian decorative motifs with new and modern forms. This approach can be seen in much of his work, which often features bold and colorful abstract art. During the 1930s and 1940s, Struve expanded his work into the field of industrial design. He was particularly successful in creating designs for textiles, glassware and ceramics. His unique style and innovative designs were well received by the public and he soon became one of the most sought-after designers in the country. In addition to his work as a designer, Struve was also a dedicated teacher. He worked as a professor of applied arts at the Statens Kunstakademie from 1946 until his retirement in 1968. Despite his long and successful career, Struve remained committed to the idea that art should be accessible to all, and he continued to create public art projects until his death in 1985.
