Helena Dalli is a prominent Maltese politician and current European Commissioner for Equality. Born on February 20, 1962, in Santa Venera, Malta, she has had a long and accomplished career in politics. Dalli is affiliated with the Maltese Labour Party and has served as Minister for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs, and Civil Liberties in the Maltese government. Dalli first entered politics in the 1990s, working as an advisor for the Minister of Economic Affairs. In 1996, she was elected as a Member of Parliament, representing the third electoral district of Malta. Throughout her time in parliament, she held various positions, including Chair of the Health Committee and Chair of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities. In 2013, Dalli took a significant step forward in her political career when she was appointed as Minister for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs, and Civil Liberties by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat. As a minister, Dalli was instrumental in the introduction of several groundbreaking legislative reforms in Malta, including the legalization of divorce, same-sex marriage, and the recognition of gender identity. These reforms solidified her reputation as a champion for human rights and equality. In 2019, Helena Dalli made history by becoming the first Maltese woman to be appointed as a European Commissioner. Her portfolio as the European Commissioner for Equality reflects her unwavering commitment to advancing gender equality, fighting discrimination, and promoting diversity. With her extensive experience and expertise in these areas, Dalli continues to actively promote and implement policies that further these goals within the European Union.
