Alamgir Kabir, born on December 26, 1940, was a renowned Bangladeshi filmmaker, screenwriter, and film critic. He greatly contributed to the development of cinema in Bangladesh and is considered one of the pioneers of the country's film industry. Kabir directed several critically acclaimed movies, gaining recognition not only in Bangladesh but also on an international level. Born in Comilla district of Bangladesh (then East Pakistan), Alamgir Kabir completed his education in Dhaka. He obtained a master's degree in Bangla from Dhaka University and later pursued a diploma in Film Direction from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. Upon his return to Bangladesh, Kabir started his career as a film critic, writing thought-provoking reviews and analyses of movies that gained him respect in the industry. In 1964, Alamgir Kabir directed his first film, "Sonar Kajol" (Golden Bangle). The movie explored social issues and received positive reception from both audiences and critics. His subsequent films, such as "Matir Moina" (The Clay Bird) in 2002 and "ShimanaPeriye" (Gone in 60 Seconds) in 1977, further strengthened his reputation as a skilled filmmaker. "Matir Moina" especially garnered international attention, winning several awards at prestigious film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival. Apart from directing, Kabir also worked as a screenwriter and made significant contributions to the realm of literature. His writings often focused on social and political matters, reflecting the tumultuous period of Bangladesh's struggle for independence. Alamgir Kabir is widely regarded as a prominent figure in the country's intellectual and cultural scene, influencing younger generations and inspiring them to engage in filmmaking and artistic pursuits. Sadly, Alamgir Kabir passed away on January 20, 1989, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape the Bangladeshi film industry.
