They say the palm is a map. Lines etched before you ever learned to grip a pen, before you had the strength to clench a fist. People call them fate lines, life lines, love lines, as if someone pressed their stylus into wet clay at the hour of your making. But when I trace mine, I don’t see a map. I see a river system, branching and breaking, feeding into currents I never thought I’d follow. It’s easy to say that the palm predicts the future, but what if it only whispers the sum of every accident that’s already in motion? The dominoes tipped, long before you ever noticed the first one falling.

Astrologers give the same sermon, just louder: that the sky itself arranges your moods and mistakes, Saturn leaning on your shoulder, Mercury dropping its glassware across the kitchen tiles of your daily life. It sounds ridiculous until you’re caught in the sweep of it, until you start noticing how often the word inevitable sneaks into your mouth. The palm, the stars, the chain of events—they all hum the same tune of determinism. Yet, in the middle of that song, I still catch myself choosing. Not big heroic choices, but small ones: whether to answer the phone, whether to linger at the yellow light, whether to hold someone’s gaze one heartbeat longer than polite.

And maybe that’s the trick. The palm tells you where the river runs, but not how you’ll swim in it. Fate is the scaffolding, free will the paint splattered across it. You can’t build a different skeleton, but you can leave fingerprints, streaks, colors that weren’t in the original draft. When I press my palm against the table, when I see those lines deepen with age, I think: these are not forecasts. These are fossils of every time I decided, or believed I decided, to turn left instead of right.

So I laugh when someone asks if I believe in palmistry. It’s not a matter of belief. It’s a reminder that my hand, whether scripted by stars or accidents, is still my hand. A record of what was, not what must be. The future remains a room with too many doors, and the lines only tell you where the hinges creak.

Els astròlegs donen el mateix sermó, només més fort: que el cel mateix organitza els teus ànims i errors, Saturn recolzat a la teva espatlla, Mercuri deixant caure la seva vaixella sobre les rajoles de la cuina de la teva vida diària. Sonen ridículs fins que et trobes atrapat en el seu corrent, fins que comences a notar amb quina freqüència la paraula inevitable s'escapa de la teva boca. La palma, les estrelles, la cadena d'esdeveniments—tots canten la mateixa melodia del determinisme. Tanmateix, al mig d'aquesta cançó, encara em trobo escollint. No grans eleccions heroïques, sinó petites: si respondre al telèfon, si aturar-me en el semàfor groc, si mantenir la mirada d'algú un batec més del que seria educat.

I potser aquest és el truc. La palma et diu on flueix el riu, però no com nedaràs en ell. El destí és l'estructura, el lliure albir la pintura esquitxada sobre ella. No pots construir un esquelet diferent, però pots deixar empremtes, ratllades, colors que no eren en el primer esborrany. Quan pressiono la meva palma contra la taula, quan veig aquelles línies aprofundir-se amb l'edat, penso: aquests no són pronòstics. Aquests són fòssils de cada vegada que vaig decidir, o vaig creure que vaig decidir, girar a l'esquerra en comptes de la dreta.

Així que riu quan algú pregunta si crec en la quiromància. No és una qüestió de creença. És un recordatori que la meva mà, ja sigui escrita per estrelles o accidents, segueix sent la meva mà. Un registre del que va ser, no del que ha de ser. El futur continua sent una habitació amb massa portes, i les línies només et diuen on les frontisses cruixen.

Amidst the rugged terrain, volcanic boulders jutted out like ancient sentinels, scattered haphazardly across the arid landscape. Here, nature reigned supreme, untouched by the hand of man, and time seemed to stand still in the vast emptiness.

In this remote wilderness, the strains of Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Californication" reverberated through the air, the melody a poignant reminder of the transient nature of existence and the allure of the West Coast dream. It was a fitting accompaniment to our journey, with the rhythmic guitar chords blending harmoniously with the pulse of the desert.

As the brisk morning air greeted us, we welcomed its chill with bitter dark coffee and a pack of tightly rolled cigarettes, their warmth a comforting presence against the desert cold. And as we surveyed the boundless expanse before us, we were humbled by the timeless majesty of the desert, knowing that we were but transient visitors in its ancient embrace.

Easy like Sunday morning

On those restless nights, it's like my brain decides to throw a never-ending party while the rest of me is begging for some shut-eye. It's a real struggle, you know? Trying to wrangle all those thoughts and feelings into some semblance of order when all you want to do is drift off into dreamland. Late-night gym sessions, audiobook marathons, or just wandering the empty streets—anything to quiet the cacophony inside my head.

But there's a certain allure to those solitary nocturnal escapades. The world takes on a different hue under the moon's soft glow, and the usual hustle and bustle of the day fades into the background. It's just you, the stars, and the occasional critter scurrying by. Like that time, I stumbled upon a hairy desert spider on my evening stroll. It scared the living daylights out of me, but it made for a good story afterward.

Then there was the night I had a close encounter with a runaway dog. I found myself sprinting for dear life, scrambling up onto playground equipment to escape its snapping jaws. The adrenaline rush was something else, let me tell you. But despite the heart-pounding excitement, there was a strange sense of peace in the air, like the world was holding its breath in anticipation of something greater.
As I navigated the moonlit streets, each step a careful dance between curiosity and caution, I couldn't help but feel a sense of camaraderie with the night. It was as if we were old friends, sharing secrets whispered in the darkness. En aquelles nits inquietes, és com si el meu cervell decidís fer una festa sense fi mentre la resta de mi suplica una mica de son. És una veritable lluita, saps? Intentant controlar tots aquells pensaments i sentiments en alguna semblança d'ordre quan tot el que vols fer és deixar-te portar al món dels somnis. Sessions de gimnàs a mitjanit, maratons d'audiollibres, o simplement vagar pels carrers buits—qualsevol cosa per silenciar la cacofonia dins del meu cap.

Però hi ha un cert encant en aquestes escapades nocturnes solitàries. El món pren un to diferent sota la suau llum de la lluna, i l'habitual bullici del dia es difumina de fons. Ets només tu, les estrelles, i algun animalet que passa de tant en tant. Com aquella vegada que em vaig trobar amb una aranya peluda al meu passeig nocturn. Em va espantar de debò, però va resultar ser una bona història després.

Després hi va haver la nit que vaig tenir un encontre proper amb un gos fugitiu. Em vaig trobar corrent per la meva vida, escalant sobre l'equipament del parc per escapar de les seves mandíbules que es tancaven. L'adrenalina era una altra cosa, deixa'm dir-te. Però malgrat l'emoció que feia bategar el cor, hi havia una estranya sensació de pau a l'aire, com si el món aguantés la respiració en anticipació d'alguna cosa més gran. 
Mentre navegava pels carrers il·luminats per la lluna, cada pas era un ball acurat entre la curiositat i la precaució, no podia evitar sentir una sensació de camaraderia amb la nit. You know, sometimes you just gotta break away from all the phony nonsense and do something real. So there I was, fed up with the same old routine, needing to shake things up a bit. I decided to take a breather from all the BS – work, family, expectations – and just hit the road.
Windows down, chasing the sunset like it owed me something. No plans, no worries, just me and the open road. Stopped at this little diner, ordered a burger, and watched the world go by. The sound of passing cars felt like a symphony of freedom, drowning out all the noise in my head.
It was one of those moments when everything just clicked, you know? No pretense, no need to put on a show. Just pure, unfiltered joy, the kind you can't fake. And as I sat there, under the fading light of the day, I couldn't help but feel alive in a way I hadn't in a long time.
Sure, it was stupid, reckless even. But sometimes you gotta be a little stupid to feel truly alive. So I let myself get lost in the moment, laughing at the absurdity of it all, reveling in the sheer madness of existence.
In the end, it wasn't about the destination or the journey. It was about reclaiming a piece of myself, breaking free from the chains of expectation and obligation. And as I drove off into the night, I knew that no matter where life took me next, I would always carry the memory of that stupid, beautiful moment with me.

Stranger in the mirror

Saps, de vegades només has de trencar amb tota la tonteria falsa i fer alguna cosa real. Així que allà estava, fart de la mateixa rutina de sempre, necessitant sacsejar una mica les coses. Vaig decidir prendre un respir de tota la merda – feina, família, expectatives – i simplement agafar la carretera.
Finestres abaixades, perseguint la posta de sol com si em degués alguna cosa. Sense plans, sense preocupacions, només jo i la carretera oberta. Vaig parar en aquest petit dinar, vaig demanar una hamburguesa i vaig mirar passar el món. El so dels cotxes que passaven semblava una simfonia de llibertat, ofegant tot el soroll al meu cap.
Va ser un d'aquells moments en què tot simplement encaixa, saps? Sense pretensions, sense necessitat de fer un espectacle. Només pura, sense filtrar alegria, aquella que no pots fingir. I mentre estava allà, sota la llum que es va apagant del dia, no podia evitar sentir-me viu d'una manera que no havia sentit en molt de temps.
Clar, era estúpid, fins i tot temerari. Però de vegades has de ser una mica estúpid per sentir-te realment viu. Així que em vaig deixar perdre en el moment, rient de l'absurd d'això, gaudint de la pura bogeria de l'existència.
Al final, no es tractava de la destinació o del viatge. Es tractava de recuperar un tros de mi mateix, alliberant-me de les cadenes de l'expectativa i l'obligació. I mentre conduïa cap a la nit, sabia que, no importa on em portés la vida a continuació, sempre portaria amb mi el record d'aquell moment estúpid i bell.

I know this is out of the blue, and maybe it got lost in the shuffle of everything else, but it’s something I wanted to get off my chest. For some bizarre reason, it’s been anchored to me, like it’s been waiting its turn to get noticed. So here goes: for Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for our time. Sure, it was brief, but it had a real, unexpected impact on me.

I’ll never be a great writer like you, but I still write, and I think you’re right—it’s therapeutic, but not in that “journaling” sort of way, or even the “reflection” sort of way. It’s something else. There’s this buildup sometimes, this weird urge that just has to find a way out. Maybe it’s the same dimension Plato talked about, where the forms exist. Like, a world where creativity just roams freely, drifting through these different corridors where imagination can stretch its legs a little.

And maybe that’s where ideas come from, from that endless place of forms. And here we are, trying to reach it, trying to shape and mold whatever drifts down to us into something with a bit of meaning. That’s what I felt when we talked—it was like you reached into that place and showed me a glimpse of what might be there.

Catching up with old ghosts

De vegades hi ha aquesta acumulació, aquesta estranya necessitat que simplement ha de trobar una sortida. Potser és la mateixa dimensió de la qual parlava Plató, on existeixen les formes. La manera com et veig aquesta nit—Déu, és una altra cosa completament diferent. És com si haguessis deixat una impressió duradora, no una d’aquelles coses efímeres, aquí i allà, sinó més aviat com un retolador permanent esborrat directament al meu cervell. No se n’anirà enlloc, això és segur. I no és només la teva aparença, encara que això sol podria aturar el trànsit. És tot el paquet, aquest exemplar impressionant de gràcia i bellesa que ets. Així que, sí, potser és una mica dramàtic dir que t’has esborrat al meu cervell amb un retolador permanent, però realment se sent així. No és res que probablement oblidaré aviat. Has deixat la teva empremta, i no és només al meu cervell, sinó també al meu cor. I això no és poca cosa, deixar una impressió així. Would you ever consider going? she asked.

"Excuse me!?" I blurted, yanked out of my trance like I'd just been slapped awake by a cold fish. My brain had been off somewhere, drifting in a fog of half-thoughts and daydreams, when she just up and dragged me back to reality.

"I asked if you’d ever considered taking a trip there?" She leaned in slightly, eyes bright, expectant.

I blinked. "Sure. On a few occasions."

Now, that was a lie, because I had no idea what "there" was. But you learn, in the fine art of conversation, that sometimes it's better to roll with it than admit you're lost.

Her eyes widened with excitement, and she scooted a little closer, her face inches from mine. "Let's go! I can't remember the last time I took a trip down south! We could bring snacks, and I have my small ferret, Gary. Are you sure you want to go!?"

Now, I was still trying to figure out what "there" was, but what I did know was that her enthusiasm was contagious. Even if I had no clue where I was agreeing to go, I suddenly didn’t mind the idea all that much.

"Uh, let me check my schedule and give you a concrete answer by Tuesday," I said, mostly to buy myself time. My mind was too distracted by the light pink lipstick stain on her straw. It had my brain wandering to the end of the night, picturing that same hue stamped on my lips.

As I fought to drag my thoughts back to the present, the muffled hum of her voice turned back into actual words I could understand.

"...But then Bonnie, the smallest of the dogs, hopped on the bed and snuggled up with me the last time we visited. I think I have photos of him!" She dug into her phone, scrolling with the kind of focus usually reserved for brain surgery. Her foot brushed up against my leg, slow and deliberate, working its way up to my knee. When her eyes flicked up at me, she bit her lip—just a little, just enough.

"Here!" she jumped. "Look, there we are!" She slid the phone across the booth.

I looked down at a picture of her with flushed cheeks, beaming, while a tiny Jack Russell sat perched atop a vintage floral couch. The couch was one of those old things with yellow and orange flowers, the kind you'd see in a grandmother’s house that somehow smelled permanently like cookies and mothballs. A small, beady-eyed ferret peeked out from one of the cushion corners, looking both guilty and mischievous.

She scooted from her side of the booth, pressing herself against me, phone in hand, flicking through the rest of the photos. I caught the scent of floral shampoo mixed with something sweet—probably whatever was on sale at Bath & Body Works that month. Normally, I wouldn’t even register something like that, but tonight, it was slightly hypnotic.

She glanced up at me through her prescription glasses, one eye slightly magnified. "Are you doing okay? I can feel your heart beating really hard."

I must've been looking at her like a man watching a particularly beautiful sunset, completely enraptured and unable to form coherent thoughts. She suddenly blushed, pulled back slightly, and let out an awkward laugh.

"Oh God! I practically jumped across the table and landed in your lap just to show you pictures of my grandparents’ house! I'm so sorry, this has to be like, such an invasion of privacy, especially on a date."

I laughed, shaking my head. "No, no, it's okay. I can tell you were really into showing me this."

She let out a breath and slumped back against the booth, grinning. "Yeah, I guess I was." Then, after a pause, "So... does that mean we're going?"

I glanced down at the ferret in the photo, then back at her. Gary the ferret. Snacks. Some unknown destination. And her.

I smirked. "I guess I better clear my schedule, huh?"

She firmly pressed her hand on the inside of my thigh as she hoisted herself up to grab her drink and plates, shifting everything over to my side of the booth. Before diving back into the conversation, she unzipped her sweater and tossed it to the other side, leaving only a snug tank top clinging to her.

In a move that felt both casual and momentous, my arm found its way around her shoulder. She nestled her head against my chest like she’d been there before, like she planned on staying. With what I’d call awkward finesse, I sprinkled table-aged Parmesan and red pepper flakes over my now-lukewarm pizza, continuing my meal with one hand.

"So, about this trip," she mumbled, mouth half-full, "I was thinking we hit the road Friday. That work for you?"

"That depends. Are we talking early morning Friday or a respectable hour where I don’t have to hate myself for the first hundred miles?"

She grinned. "I was thinking we leave at sunrise, but since I actually want you to come, let’s make it more like ten."

"Much better." I took a bite of pizza. "And what exactly am I signing up for?"

She set her slice down and turned toward me, legs folding up onto the seat. "A weekend in the middle of nowhere, but the good kind of nowhere. Small town, barely anything open after nine, but my grandparents’ house is there, and it’s got this huge backyard that leads into the woods. We’ll eat too much, drink too much, and if you’re lucky, I might let you hold Gary."

"That’s a hell of a sales pitch," I said, wiping my hands on a napkin. "But I gotta be honest, the deal-breaker here is Gary. I need to know upfront—does he bite?"

She snorted. "Only if you deserve it. Fair enough," she said, swallowing the last bite of my pizza and wiping her hands on a napkin that disintegrated like wet tissue paper.

She grinned, swirling her straw in the last watery remnants of her soda. “Alright, then. Best movie adaptation of a novel. Go.”

I leaned back, arm still slung over her shoulder, considering. “Tough call, but No Country for Old Men was about as close to perfect as you can get.”

She rolled her eyes. “Predictable. Every guy with half a shelf of books loves Cormac McCarthy.”

“Because the man wrote with the wrath of God in his sentences.”

“Sure, but—” she wiggled her fingers as if conjuring some unseen argument “—just because it sticks to the book doesn’t make it the best. The movie’s great, but it’s like a mirror image. I want an adaptation that’s better than the book.”

I scoffed. “That’s rare.”

“Rare but possible,” she said, eyes flashing. “Jaws.”

I paused. “Alright, I’ll give you that one.”

She smirked and popped a fry in her mouth, chewing with smug satisfaction.

I gestured toward her drink. “You gonna finish that?”

“Don’t change the subject.” She pointed at me, dramatic. “What about the worst adaptation? The absolute crime against literature?”

I barely had to think. “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

Her mouth fell open. “Excuse me?”

“Absolute butcher job,” I said. “Turned Capote’s Holly Golightly into some quirky, loveable pixie when in reality, she was flighty, manipulative, and selfish. Hell, Capote himself hated what they did to her.”

She gasped. “Audrey was iconic.”

“Oh, sure. Iconic in the sense that she made a great poster. But as an actual character? Watered down.”

“She was charming,” she argued, turning toward me now, tucking her legs under herself in the booth. Her knee pressed against my thigh, whether intentional or not, I wasn’t sure. “Aloof and captivating. Maybe not perfectly faithful to the book, but cinema isn’t about word-for-word translations.”

“It’s about getting the essence right,” I countered. “And they missed the point. They turned her into this Manic Pixie Dream Girl before that was even a thing.”

“Okay,” she said, lifting a finger. “But you’re conveniently ignoring the fact that the movie is what made Holly legendary. The book was great, but the film? That’s what gave her staying power.”

I huffed. “Staying power as a fantasy, not a real person. Capote wrote Holly as complicated, calculating. The film made her a dream, not a woman.”

She tapped her nails against the table, watching me, then leaned in. “Let me guess—you’re the kind of guy who thinks he wants a Holly Golightly, but really, you’d lose your mind dealing with one.”

I smirked. “Oh yeah? And what kind of guy do you think I am?”

She pretended to think, biting the corner of her lip. “The kind who likes a challenge, but only up to a point. You want a woman who’s sharp, but not too sharp. Playful, but not exhausting. Mysterious, but not frustrating. You want complexity in the way a person appreciates jazz—something that sounds spontaneous but still follows structure.”

I let out a low laugh, shaking my head. “You always analyze your dates like a character study?”

“Only when they try to tell me Audrey Hepburn wasn’t a goddamn queen,” she said, grinning.

I was about to argue again, but she reached over, slowly, and plucked the napkin from my fingers, dabbing at a stray flake of Parmesan near my mouth. Her eyes flicked to mine, and she held them there just long enough to shift the energy between us.

“Tell me,” she said, voice softer now, more teasing, “who’s your real movie crush? And don’t give me some cool guy answer like Sharon Stone in Casino.”

I chuckled. “That’s an oddly specific call-out.”

She shrugged. “I’ve had this debate before.”

I leaned in, mirroring her playfulness. “You tell me yours first.”

She sighed dramatically. “Fine. But you can’t judge me.”

“I make no promises.”

She tapped a finger against her chin, then admitted, “Rita Hayworth in Gilda.”

I whistled low. “Damn. You really are a classic Hollywood girl.”

“She was untouchable,” she said. “That black dress? That ‘Put the Blame on Mame’ scene? She owned every second of that screen time.”

I nodded. “Good pick. Hard to argue.”

She leaned closer, conspiratorial. “Okay, now yours.”

I hesitated, then said, “Jessica Rabbit.”

She groaned. “Ugh. You’re that guy?”

“She’s literally drawn to be perfect!” I defended. “And she’s got that voice. The hair. The—”

“The everything, yeah, yeah,” she interrupted, shaking her head. “God, men are so predictable.”

I shrugged. “At least I didn’t say Casino Sharon Stone.”

She rolled her eyes, but she was smiling.

For a while, we just sat there, the warmth between us settling into something easier, something unspoken but understood. She absentmindedly traced circles on the table with her fingertip, then looked up at me, a glint in her eyes.

“So,” she said, “are you gonna take that trip with me or what?”

I exhaled, shaking my head with a smirk. “Still gotta check my schedule.”

She made a noise in the back of her throat, dramatic and exaggerated. “Fine. But if you make me wait too long, I’m going without you.”

I tapped my fingers against the table, considering her, the way she shifted so effortlessly from fiery debate to teasing charm.

“Tell you what,” I said. “I’ll give you an answer by Tuesday.”

She grinned, triumphant. “Deal.”

She clinked her straw against the ice in her glass, then drained the last sip. The restaurant had mostly emptied out around us, and the neon glow of the sign outside painted the booth in soft reds and blues.

She stretched her arms, then tilted her head, eyes meeting mine with that same playful challenge.

“Now,” she said, “let’s talk The Shining. Book or movie?”

I groaned. “Oh, hell no. We are not starting this fight at midnight.”

She laughed, nudging her knee against mine. “Scared you’ll lose?”

I smirked. “No, just saving you from being wrong twice in one night.”

“We’ll see about that,” she said, grinning like she already knew she’d won.

The pizza parlor was damn near empty. The staff had started stacking chairs, wiping down tables with a half-assed effort that said, We’re closed, please leave. A teenager with a mop gave us the side-eye as he slopped dirty water around. The air smelled like old cheese and disinfectant.

“Guess that’s our cue,” I said, stretching.

She hopped up first, grabbing a to-go box with the last sad slice of pizza and tucking her purse under her arm. “C’mon, let’s get outta here before they throw us out.”

Outside, the night had settled in thick, streetlights flickering like they weren’t sure if they wanted to stay awake. The pavement was cracked, weeds poking through in stubborn little patches. Someone, probably some kid with a dollar-store piece of chalk and a sense of purpose, had drawn a hopscotch grid that had seen better days. Half-faded squares, numbers smudged from time and weather, a relic from some afternoon long gone.

She saw it and lit up like a damn firecracker.

Still holding the pizza box in one hand and her purse in the other, she hopped onto one square, then the next, teetering a little but laughing through it. “Think I still got it,” she said, winking over her shoulder.

“Uh-huh,” I said, watching her wobble on one foot.

“You sound skeptical.”

“Not skeptical. Just waiting to see if I gotta catch you.”

“Pft.” She stuck out her tongue, then leaped to the last square, landing with her arms out like she’d just stuck the perfect dismount in the Olympics.

“Ta-da,” she said, spinning around, grinning.

“Well, hell,” I said. “That was impressive. Where’s my encore?”

She plopped the pizza box against my chest. “Encore costs extra.”

I took it, watching as she smoothed her dress, shifting from playful to something quieter. She adjusted her glasses, and I noticed the fog starting to build up on the rims from the cool air settling in.

“Well,” she said, turning to face me. “This is my stop.”

I was busy kicking at a loose piece of gravel, watching it skitter across the sidewalk like a confused beetle. Trailing her closely, I stepped up, closing that last bit of space between us.

“I had a good time,” I said, voice lower than I’d planned. “I enjoy your company.”

She looked up at me, something unreadable in her face for a second, then softened.

“I had a good time too,” she said.

There was that moment, you know the one—where everything slows down, where you can feel the heat rolling off someone even in the cool night air. Her glasses fogged up a little more, and she pulled them off absently, wiping at them with the hem of her dress.

“You know,” she said, not quite meeting my eyes, “you’re alright.”

“Yeah.” She slid her glasses back on, tilting her head, considering. “I mean, questionable taste in movie adaptations, but otherwise.”

“Otherwise?”

“Otherwise,” she echoed, drawing it out like she was waiting for me to make a move.

I shifted the pizza box under one arm. “You want me to walk you up?”

She thought about it. “Nah. I think I’ll let you wonder if I made it to my door safely.”

“Oh, that’s cold.”

She smirked, backing up toward her building, keys jingling in her free hand. “G’night, movie snob.”

“G’night, Audrey Hepburn apologist.”

She laughed, and then she was gone, disappearing up the steps, the door clicking shut behind her.

I stood there for a second, the weight of the pizza box oddly heavy, the night air settling thick around me. Then I turned, kicking another loose piece of gravel just for the hell of it, and started walking home.

I found myself sidetracked on the drive home, like my brain had thrown up a detour sign. Instead of turning into my driveway, I pulled into the lot of a little dive bar just around the corner from my house. Nothing fancy—neon beer signs buzzing in the window, a jukebox that hadn’t been updated since the early 2000s, and a bartender who knew my name but didn’t expect to see me on a Wednesday night.

It was slow, just a few regulars hunched over their drinks and a couple of guys shooting pool in the back, talking big but playing sloppy. The kind of night where nobody’s in a rush, just letting the minutes roll by like a lazy river.

The bartender, Shannon, looked up from wiping down the counter and raised an eyebrow. “Well, look what the cat dragged in. You lose track of what day it is?”

“Something like that,” I said, settling onto a stool.

“Damn,” I said, taking the first sip. “Guess I should come in on Wednesdays more often.”

“Wouldn’t hurt my tips,” she said, leaning against the bar. “So what’s got you out late on a school night?”

I shrugged. “One of those nights where you don’t feel like going home right away.”

She nodded like she understood, because she probably did.

We fell into an easy back-and-forth, talking about her finally deciding to go back to school.

“It’s online,” she said, pulling a rag through her hands. “Not that I got a ton of time, but I figured I should get off my ass and do something.”

“What are you studying?”

She smirked. “Business. Figured if I’m gonna deal with drunk idiots all day, I might as well get paid more for it.”

“Smart.”

“Damn right,” she said, topping off my beer even though I wasn’t halfway through. “Plus, I don’t want to be bartending forever. My back’s already telling me I made a mistake.”

“And your daughter? She liking school?”

“She loves it,” she said, smiling now, the kind that softens a person’s whole face. “Wants to be a vet. Can’t even take her past a stray cat without her wanting to adopt it.”

“That’s a good thing, though, right?”

“Yeah. Just means I gotta keep telling her no every other day.”

“Start small. Get her a fish.”

“Tried. She cried for two days when it died.”

I let out a low whistle. “Tough break.”

“Tell me about it,” she said, tossing the rag over her shoulder. “She’s got too big of a heart. Gets that from her dad. Not from me.”

I just smirked at that. “Yeah, sure.”

She leaned in, giving me a knowing look. “So what about you? You out late ‘cause you got a good reason, or ‘cause you got a bad one?”

I hesitated just long enough for her to notice.

She laughed, shaking her head. “That means a woman.”

I took a slow sip of my beer. “Maybe.”

“Oh, now I gotta know,” she said, crossing her arms. “You actually go on a date? Hell freezing over?”

I rolled my eyes. “I go on dates.”

“Sure. And I bet you enjoy dental surgery too.”

I sighed, setting my beer down. “It was… good.”

Her eyebrow went up. “Good?”

“Yeah. Good.”

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

“You are,” she said, grinning now. “I can see it. Your face does this thing—”

“I don’t have a ‘thing.’”

“Oh, you definitely have a thing,” she said, laughing now. “C’mon. Spill it. I need some good gossip to get me through the rest of this shift.”

I sighed, drumming my fingers on the bar. “She’s sharp. Quick. Got opinions about movies that are just wrong—”

“Oof. Dealbreaker?”

“Almost. But she argues her point like it’s life or death, and I respect that.”

Shannon nodded. “So, you’re gonna see her again?”

I thought about it, about the way she looked at me at the end of the night, about the fog on her glasses, the way she hopped on that sidewalk like a kid, completely unbothered by anything.

“Yeah,” I said finally. “I think I will.”

Shannon grinned. “Well, I’ll be damned. You do like someone.”

I shook my head, but I couldn’t help but smirk.

She slid me another beer. “On the house. For making my night more interesting.”
