Bio – Eugène Ritt
Eugène Ritt was a prominent French mathematician known for his research in algebraic geometry and the theory of algebraic groups. Born on December 21, 1922 in Strasbourg, France, Ritt started his academic career by studying at the École Normale Supérieure de Paris, graduating with a degree in mathematics in 1949. He then went on to complete his doctorate at the University of Paris under the supervision of André Weil, a legendary mathematician. Throughout his career, Ritt made significant contributions to the field of algebraic geometry, including his work on the structure of algebraic groups, the Brauer Group, and algebraic surfaces. One of his most famous results is the Ritt-Satz, which provides a characterization of algebraic curves over the complex numbers. He also developed a deep understanding of the cohomology of algebraic varieties, which he used to classify them according to their properties. Beyond his groundbreaking research, Ritt was an influential figure in the French mathematical community, serving as the director of the Henri Poincaré Institute and as president of the French Mathematical Society. His leadership helped to shape the course of mathematics in France and promote its growth around the world. He also mentored many young mathematicians, including Jean-Pierre Serre, who went on to become one of the most celebrated mathematicians of his time. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field, Ritt received numerous honours and awards throughout his career, including the Prix Francqui in 1972, the Henri Poincaré Prize in 1981, and the Wolf Prize in Mathematics in 1989. He passed away on January 22, 2007, leaving behind a lasting legacy in mathematics and inspiring generations of mathematicians to come.
