Akosua Busia is a renowned Ghanaian actress, filmmaker, author, and activist. Born on December 30, 1966, in Accra, Ghana, she is the daughter of Ghana's second prime minister, Kofi Abrefa Busia. Akosua grew up in England but moved to Ghana in 1978 following the overthrow of her uncle, General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, by Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings, following which she became a political refugee. Akosua Busia is best known for her role as Nettie Harris, the younger sister of Celie in Steven Spielberg's 1985 film "The Color Purple." Her portrayal of the character earned her critical acclaim as well as a nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Busia has since gone on to appear in other films such as "Rosewood" and "The Seventh Sign." In addition to her acting career, Akosua Busia is also a published author. Her debut novel "The Seasons of Beento Blackbird" was published in 1997 and was nominated for several literary awards. She has also written several other works, including a collection of short stories and a non-fiction book detailing her experience as a political refugee.
