"A lot of directors don't want the pressure of a movie the size of 'Dirty Harry.' I'd rather deal with the pressure of a big movie than the pressure of a bad movie."

Don Siegel

Bio – Don Siegel

Don Siegel was an American film director and producer, known for his work in both the classic Hollywood era and the New Hollywood movement of the 1960s and 70s. Born in Chicago in 1912, Siegel began his career as a film editor in the late 1930s before transitioning to directing in the early 1940s. Over the course of his long and varied career, he directed a wide range of films, including gritty crime dramas, war movies, westerns, and science fiction classics. Siegel's early work as a director included a number of films for Warner Bros., such as "The Verdict" (1946) and "The Big Steal" (1949), both of which starred Burt Lancaster. He received critical acclaim for his first big hit, "The Gunfighter" (1950), a thoughtful and psychologically complex western starring Gregory Peck. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, Siegel continued to work steadily, directing such notable films as "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956), "Hell Is for Heroes" (1962), and "The Killers" (1964), a remake of the classic film noir of the same name. In the 1970s, Siegel became closely associated with the emerging New Hollywood movement, and his films became grittier and more politically charged. He worked with Clint Eastwood on several films, including the iconic police thriller "Dirty Harry" (1971), which became a sensation and spawned a series of sequels. Siegel continued to direct well into his 70s, and his final film, "Jinxed!" (1982), starred Bette Midler and was released the same year that he passed away at the age of 78. His legacy as a filmmaker remains significant, and his influence can be seen in the work of subsequent generations of directors.
