Kawabuchi's deep passion for soccer became evident at a young age when he played for his high school team, Tokyo First Middle School. He continued his soccer journey at the prestigious Waseda University, competing at the highest collegiate level. Soon after graduating, he turned professional and played for Yanmar Diesel (now Cerezo Osaka), a team in the Japan Soccer League. Though his playing career was cut short due to injury, Kawabuchi's love for the sport pushed him towards a new path as a coach and administrator. In 1979, Kawabuchi was appointed as the coach of the Japanese national team, where he made significant efforts to improve the country's soccer performance on the international stage. Beyond soccer, Saburō Kawabuchi has been an influential figure within the Japanese sports community at large. He played an instrumental role in the successful bid for Japan to co-host the 2002 FIFA World Cup with South Korea, arguably one of the most significant sporting events in the country's history.
