Kenneth Mars was an American actor, voice actor and comedian born on April 4, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He grew up in a family of performers, as his mother worked as a theatre costume designer, while his father was an orchestra leader. Mars was an exceptional student and received a scholarship to attend Northwestern University, where he majored in acting and served as the president of the speech team. Upon graduation, he further honed his skills as a member of the prestigious Second City improvisational theatre group.
In the mid-1960s, Kenneth Mars landed a role in the stage production of "The Producers" which later evolved into the movie of the same name. This was directed by Mel Brooks who cast Mars in several of his subsequent films, including "Young Frankenstein" and "History of the World, Part I". He lent his voice to several animated films, most notably as the character of Triton in Disney’s "The Little Mermaid". Mars had a versatile range and appeared in many other notable films such as "The Twelve Chairs", "Radio Days", and "Malcolm X".
Mars also made frequent appearances on television shows throughout his career. He was a guest on many popular shows including "Love Boat", "Murder, She Wrote" and "The Golden Girls". In the late 1980s, he landed a recurring role on the sitcom "Malcolm & Eddie" as the grandfather of the show’s main character. His last appearance on screen was in the 2005 film "Mystery, Alaska".
