Some of his notable TV roles include the character of Dr. Drew Pearson in NBC's drama series "The Doctors and the Nurses" and Judge Glenn Stephens in the NBC legal drama series "Madame Secretary." Apart from his TV roles, Gates also graced the film industry by appearing in several films such as "The Caine Mutiny," "IEDs in Baghdad," and "The FBI Story," among others. Gates' enormous contributions to the acting industry earned him several accolades throughout his career. He was a recipient of a prestigious Drama Desk Award for his outstanding performance in the Broadway production of "The Indian Wants the Bronx." Gates also won an Emmy Award in 1959 in the category of 'Best Supporting Actor in a Mystery, Intrigue or Adventure' series for his role in "Alfred Hitchcock Presents."
