Michael Burgess was a Canadian tenor and actor, known for his roles in several productions of musical theatre, including the Canadian production of Les Miserables. Born on February 22nd, 1945, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Burgess grew up around music. He began singing at a young age and initially trained as a classical pianist. During his childhood, he also performed in several church choirs. After completing his education, Burgess began his career as a performer in the late 1960s. He initially appeared in various productions of musical theatre in Canada, including productions of Godspell and Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. Burgess is best known for his role as Jean Valjean in the Toronto production of Les Miserables. He was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award for his performance in the production. Apart from theatre, Burgess was also a recording artist, releasing several albums of songs, including works by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Leonard Cohen. He also created a one-man show, A Clockwork Orange County, which he performed at various venues across Canada and the United States. Burgess later suffered from vocal problems and retired from performing in 2009. He passed away on September 28th, 2015, at the age of 70, due to cancer. Michael Burgess is remembered as a gifted tenor with a powerful voice and captivating stage presence. His contributions to Canadian theatre and music have had a profound impact on the industry and have inspired many aspiring performers to follow in his footsteps.
