Timothy Findley was a Canadian novelist and playwright, born on October 30, 1930, in Toronto, Ontario. He was raised in the city and attended St. Andrew's College in Aurora, Ontario. After graduating, he pursued a career in acting and worked with famous Canadian theatre companies, such as the Stratford Festival and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Findley began his writing career in the mid-1960s, publishing his first novel, The Last of the Crazy People, in 1967. He went on to write many successful novels, including The Wars, Famous Last Words, Not Wanted on the Voyage, and The Piano Man's Daughter, many of which earned him critical acclaim and numerous awards. He was also recognized for his screenplay adaptations of his own novels, such as the 1981 film adaptation of The Wars, which won a Genie Award. In addition to his writing, Findley was an activist and advocate for numerous causes, including gay rights and the environment. In 1996, he was awarded the Order of Ontario, and in 2002, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions to Canadian literature and cultural life. He passed away on June 20, 2002, in Brignoles, France, at the age of 71, leaving behind a legacy as one of Canada's most beloved and influential writers.
