David Sheppard

David Sheppard Bio

David Sheppard was a renowned English cricketer and bishop, born on March 6, 1929, in Reigate, Surrey, United Kingdom, and passed away on March 5, 2005, in Liverpool, United Kingdom. He is more commonly known as the Rt Rev. Lord Sheppard of Liverpool or simply David Sheppard. Sheppard had an illustrious career in cricket and was also highly respected as a religious leader in the United Kingdom. Sheppard’s cricketing journey started in the 1950s, where he played as a left-handed batsman, primarily for Sussex and England. His elegant batting style and composed technique earned him the nickname of "Sheppo." He went to score a commendable 100-plus century innings at Lord’s in 1953 against the powerful Australian squad. Sheppard played 22 Test matches for England and amassed 1,113 runs at an average of 31.80, including three centuries and four fifties. After retiring from cricket and engaging in missionary work, Sheppard was ordained in 1955 and consecrated as a Bishop nearly two decades later in 1975. Bishop Sheppard is known for his passion for ministry in urban areas and his pioneering work in the Fresh Expressions movement, which aimed to reach out to those who often feel disconnected from the church. He was appointed Bishop of Liverpool in 1975, serving in this capacity for 17 years. David Sheppard was widely recognized for his work, and his contributions were honored in numerous ways. In 1998, he was made a life peer and became Baron Sheppard of Liverpool. His work was also recognized by the Queen in 1996 when he was awarded the insignia of a Companion of Honour. The David Sheppard Cricket Trust was established to honor his legacy and continues to inspire budding cricketers to this day.
