He then made his way to Gala RFC, where he had a successful career, earning numerous caps for Scotland's under-19 and under-21 teams. McRae's professional rugby career began in 1993 when he signed with English Premiership team London Scottish. He then moved to England's top-flight club, Sale Sharks, where he made 70 appearances and earned the club's player of the year award twice. McRae's performances earned him a call-up to the Scotland national team, where he played in the 1997 and 1999 Rugby World Cups. Following his time in England, McRae made a move to French club Perpignan, where he played for three seasons. In 2002, he returned to Scotland to play for Edinburgh Rugby, where he ended his professional career in 2004. After his retirement from rugby, McRae became a rugby commentator for Sky Sports and also worked as a rugby consultant for businesses. Duncan McRae's rugby career was not without controversy, as he was involved in a now-infamous incident during a match between Australia and Scotland in 1997. McRae punched Australian player Ron Cribb multiple times during a brawl that took place on the field. The incident resulted in McRae being banned from rugby for two years and fined, but he remains a memorable figure in Scottish rugby history.
