Edward Petherbridge Bio
Edward Petherbridge is a British actor known for his phenomenal stage performances in the United Kingdom. Born on August 3, 1936, in Bradford, England, Petherbridge grew up with an early passion for theatre and began acting with local theatre companies during his teenage years. He later moved to London to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where he received formal training in acting. Petherbridge made his professional debut in 1962 with the Nottingham Playhouse, and soon after, he became a prominent stage actor in London’s West End. His breakthrough role came in 1974 when he played the lead in Peter Shaffer's play, "Equus." Petherbridge’s nuanced portrayal of psychologist Martin Dysart garnered critical acclaim, and he received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance. Apart from his stage work, Petherbridge has also appeared in several television and film productions. He is known for his role as Lord Peter Wimsey in the British television series "The Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries," which aired from 1972 to 1975. He also played Bishop Philip in the romantic comedy "Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie" (1997) and made a brief appearance in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" (1991). Despite his successful acting career, Petherbridge faced a major setback in 2006 when he suffered a stroke during a performance of Simon Gray's play, "The Common Pursuit." The stroke left him partially paralyzed and unable to continue acting for a few years. However, he made a remarkable recovery and returned to the stage in 2012, starring in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of "Timon of Athens." Today, Petherbridge is still active in the theatre world and continues to inspire generations of aspiring actors with his talent and passion.
