He attended University College, Oxford, where he was active in the drama society and went on to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

West began his acting career in the theater, making his debut in 1929 in a production of "The Rivals." He later appeared in many successful stage plays in the West End and on Broadway, including "The Recruiting Officer," "The Father," and "The Taming of The Shrew." West was renowned for his ability to play a wide range of characters from comedy to tragedy.

He appeared in more than 40 movies, including "The Cruel Sea," "The Day the Earth Caught Fire," and "Our Man in Havana." On television, he was best known for his role as Bishop Henry in the popular BBC series "The Forsyte Saga."
