Vanity Bio

Denise Katrina Matthews, professionally known as Vanity, was a Canadian singer, actress, and model. She gained prominence in the 80s with her sultry vocals, captivating stage presence, and stunning beauty. Vanity was born on January 4, 1959, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. She grew up in a broken home and had a difficult childhood marked by poverty, abuse, and neglect. At the age of 17, she left home and moved to Toronto, where she pursued a career in modeling and acting. Vanity's breakthrough came in 1982 when she teamed up with Prince and his band, The Revolution. Prince discovered her at a nightclub in Toronto and was immediately struck by her beauty and charisma. He recruited her to be the lead singer of Vanity 6, an all-female group that he had assembled. The group's self-titled debut album was a commercial success, thanks to the hit single "Nasty Girl," which was co-written by Vanity and Prince. The song became an instant classic and helped to establish Vanity as a sex symbol and pop icon. Vanity's success continued throughout the 80s with a string of solo albums and movie roles. She starred in films like "The Last Dragon," "Action Jackson," and "52 Pick-Up." In 1984, she released her debut solo album, "Wild Animal," which spawned the hit single "Pretty Mess." Her follow-up album, "Skin on Skin," was released in 1986 and featured the hit single "Under the Influence." Vanity's music was a blend of pop, rock, and funk, and showcased her powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence. Tragically, Vanity passed away on February 15, 2016, at the age of 57. She had battled health issues for years, including kidney failure and a near-fatal drug overdose in the 90s. However, she had rediscovered her faith in God and had become a born-again Christian in the years before her death. Vanity's legacy lives on, and she remains a beloved figure in pop culture and music history.
