Verna Bloom Bio

Verna Bloom was an American actress known for her impactful performances in film, television, and theater. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1939, Bloom attended Boston University where she studied acting before moving to New York City to pursue a career in theater. She eventually found success on Broadway, earning a Tony nomination for her performance in Clifford Odets' play "After the Fall." Bloom's film career began in the 1960s, with her breakout role coming in the 1970 film "Medium Cool," directed by Haskell Wexler. She played the character Eileen, a television director caught up in the chaotic events surrounding the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Bloom's naturalistic performance and striking presence on screen helped establish her as a talented performer worthy of recognition. Throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, Bloom continued to appear in notable films, including Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ" and David Lynch's "Blue Velvet." Her performances were marked by a raw emotional intensity and a willingness to take bold risks as an actor. She also worked on television, with guest roles on popular shows like "The Sopranos" and "Highway to Heaven." Bloom's career slowed down in the 1990s, but she continued to work occasionally in film and TV. She also turned her attention to teaching acting, working at the Lee Strasberg Institute in New York.
