Nova Pilbeam Bio
Nova Pilbeam was a British actress born in Southampton, Hampshire, England, on November 15th, 1919, and died in Knysna, South Africa, on July 17th, 2015. She began her career as a child actress and worked in the film industry until 1950 when she retired after marrying the South African author and producer, Penelope Mortimer. Pilbeam is best known for her roles in the film "Young and Innocent" (1937) directed by Alfred Hitchcock and "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1934).
Nova Pilbeam was discovered by the film director, George Pearson, who gave her a small role in the silent film "The Chance of a Night Time" (1929). After that, she was signed by British International Pictures (BIP) and played various roles in their films, such as "The Scoop" (1930) and "Carnival" (1931) directed by Herbert Wilcox. Pilbeam's breakthrough role came in 1934 when she played the daughter of the protagonists in the thriller "The Man Who Knew Too Much," directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
In 1935 Nova Pilbeam signed a contract with the French film company, Gaumont-British, and starred in several films, including "The Little Rebel" (1937), "The Four Feathers" (1939), and "Cheer Boys Cheer" (1939). However, due to the outbreak of World War II, Pilbeam limited her appearances in films and focused on serving as a volunteer nurse for the Red Cross. She returned to acting after the war and played her last role as Ann Barton in the film "The Avengers" (1950).
Nova Pilbeam's career spanned over two decades, during which she portrayed a wide range of characters in films. She is remembered as one of the most talented actresses of her time and her collaboration with Alfred Hitchcock is considered iconic. Although she retired from acting early in her life, her legacy in the film industry continues to inspire young actors and filmmakers.
