Peter Barkworth was a prominent English actor whose career spanned over four decades from the 1950s to the 1990s. He was born on January 14, 1929, in Margate, Kent, England, and grew up in Folkestone. Barkworth was educated at Bradfield College, Berkshire, and later trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), London, along with other legendary actors like Albert Finney, Alan Bates, and Peter O'Toole. Barkworth started his acting career with stage productions and worked with various theatre groups, such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. He made his first film debut in 1959 with the thriller movie "Sapphire," and subsequently, he appeared in several films like "The Hill" (1965), "The Naked Runner" (1967), "Nicholas and Alexandra" (1971), "A Bridge Too Far" (1977), "Foreign Body" (1986), among others. Peter Barkworth also made major appearances in popular British TV dramas like "The Power Game," "Z-Cars," and "The Onedin Line." However, he became widely known for his role as Sir Arnold Robinson, the cabinet secretary to the British prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, in the hit TV series "Yes, Minister" and "Yes, Prime Minister" in the 1980s. Barkworth was not just a versatile actor but also a talented screenwriter and director. He wrote several stage productions and teleplays and even directed some of them. Barkworth was also a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4's "The Archers" for many years. He was awarded the CBE in 1983 for services to drama and died of cancer on October 21, 2006, in Hampstead, London, at the age of 77.
