Varney's acting career began in the 1950s with appearances in various television shows such as "The Benny Hill Show" and "The Dickie Valentine Show." He became a household name in the 1960s playing the role of Harry Lambert in the sitcom "The Rag Trade." However, it was his portrayal of the cheeky bus driver Stanley Dunstan in "On the Buses" that endeared him to the British audience. The show ran for seven series and cemented his status as one of Britain's most beloved comedians. Aside from acting, Varney was also a successful singer, releasing several singles and albums throughout his career. He also wrote the theme tune for "On the Buses" entitled "The Mutiny's On the Buses." In 1976, he starred in the film "Holiday on the Buses," which was a spin-off of the TV series.
