Mia May

Mia May Bio

Mia May was an Austrian actress, writer, and director who was active during the silent film era. She was born on June 2, 1884, in Vienna, Austria, under the name Hermine Pfleger. May started her career as a stage actress in 1911, but in 1912, she made her film debut in a supporting role in "Das Mirakel" directed by Max Reinhardt. May's talent and charisma were undeniable, and she soon became a popular leading lady in Austrian cinema, and later in German cinema. In 1916, Mia May founded her film production company, May-Film GmbH, which produced several successful films. She then began directing her own films and wrote screenplays for her productions. May directed and starred in her most famous film, "Die Herrin der Welt" (Mistress of the World), which was released in 1919. The film was a huge commercial success, and May became one of the most prominent figures in Austrian cinema. Her films often explored themes of power, love, and gender roles. During the early 1920s, May's career slowed down, and she retired from acting in 1926. However, she continued to direct films and wrote several screenplays. May also worked as a producer during the 1930s, but as a Jew, she was forced to flee Austria when the Nazis came to power in 1938. She settled in Switzerland and lived there until her death in 1980 at the age of 96. Despite her significant contributions to early cinema, Mia May's work has been largely forgotten outside Austria and Germany. However, her impact on the film industry cannot be overstated, and her films are still admired by aficionados of silent cinema.
