Anne Wiazemsky was a French actress, novelist, and director whose impressive career spanned over five decades. Born in Berlin to French parents on May 14, 1947, she spent her childhood in France and Switzerland. Her father was Francois Mauriac, a French writer and Nobel Prize winner, and her mother was a translator. Wiazemsky studied philosophy at Sorbonne University in Paris before venturing into the world of acting. Wiazemsky made her acting debut in 1966 in Robert Bresson's film "Au Hasard Balthazar." She went on to work with other prominent directors, including Jean-Luc Godard, with whom she collaborated on several films, such as "La Chinoise" and "Weekend." She was known for her brooding beauty and her nuanced performances, which brought complex female characters to life on the screen. Aside from her acting career, Wiazemsky was also a celebrated novelist. In 1993, she won the Prix Goncourt for her autobiographical novel, "Jeune Fille." This book chronicled her childhood, her complicated relationship with her father, and her marriage to Godard, who was 17 years her senior. Wiazemsky chronicled her experiences with Godard in her book "Un An Apres," which was adapted into a film in 2017 titled "Redoubtable," directed by Michel Hazanavicius. Anne Wiazemsky passed away on October 5, 2017, in Paris, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She left behind a rich legacy in French cinema and literature, and her work continues to inspire new generations of artists.
