Theophilus Champmeslé was a famous French actor who was born in the year 1628, in Rouen, France. He was a talented actor, who was popular for acting in plays for almost half a century. Champmeslé's career kicked off in the year 1648, and he acted almost continuously, attracting the attention of the public right until his death in 1688. Champmeslé started as a member of the Cid troupe in Rouen, where he first appeared on stage at the age of 20. He eventually moved to the Hotel de Bourgogne Theatre in Paris, where he played leading roles in numerous prestigious productions. One of his most celebrated roles was Achilles in "La Mort d’Hector" by Jean Racine. He was also known for his portrayal of tragic heroes like Orestes, Pyrrhus, and Nero. Champmeslé not only acted in plays but also wrote a few of his own. He wrote the tragedies, "Herod" and "Hecuba," which were both performed on prominent stages during his time. He even went as far as to establish his own troupe of actors, working alongside his wife, the celebrated actress, Marie Champmeslé. Together, their troupe performed for members of the royal court, and even the King himself. Champmeslé’s contribution to French theatre was immense, and he is still remembered today as one of the greatest French actors of all time. His legacy continues to exert immense influence even today, inspiring and influencing actors worldwide to hone their craft and be the best they can be on the stage - something that Champmeslé did with great passion and devotion.
