He collaborated with some of the most prominent directors of his time, including Claude Chabrol, Marguerite Duras, Patrice Chéreau, and Andrzej Zulawski, among others. Some of his most notable films include Chabrol’s “Violette,” in which he played a young and seductive drifter, and Zulawski’s “L'important c'est d'aimer,” in which he played an aging and alcoholic actor. He won the César Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the latter performance. Apart from his acting career, Léotard was also a prolific poet and writer, and published several books of poetry, essays, and autobiographical accounts during his lifetime. He was also a talented musician and singer, and released several albums that showcased his unique and haunting voice. Léotard passed away on August 25, 2001, at the age of 60, due to lung cancer.
