Erik Charell

Erik Charell Bio

Erik Charell was a well-known theatrical director, writer, and producer who was born on October 8, 1894, in Breslau (modern-day Wrocław) in Germany. He was known for his innovative productions and remarkable contributions to the entertainment industry. Charell began his career as an actor in Berlin in 1919 before moving to directing and producing in the early 1920s. He is widely recognized as one of the most significant figures in German theatre history, having created bold and imaginative works that were praised for their avant-garde style. One of Charell's major breakthroughs came in 1929 when he created the production of "Das Blaue Engel" (The Blue Angel), which starred Marlene Dietrich. The play would later be adapted into a movie, which made Dietrich an international star. Charell's productions of musical comedies, operettas and other theatrical performances throughout the 1930s were seen as daring, imaginative and financially successful, contributing to the Golden Age of German theatre. However, with the rise of the Nazi party, Charell was forced to flee Germany in 1933 due to his Jewish heritage. He moved to Paris and continued his career as a director and producer in French theatre, where he worked on productions such as "Moulin Rouge" and "La Folie du Jour." He later emigrated to the United States, where he worked on several Broadway productions, including "Can-Can" and "Lilo." In 1948, he returned to Germany to direct the film version of the musical "Das Dreimäderlhaus" (The Three Penny Opera) and remained there for the rest of his life. Charell's legacy in German theatre and entertainment continues to be celebrated today. He is remembered as a visionary who brought new life and creativity to the stage, despite the turbulent political climate of his time. His productions of the early 20th century continue to inspire contemporary directors and artists, with many citing Charell as an influence on their work.
