Born on March 27, 1945, in Hamburg, he was a well-known personality in the German entertainment industry for over four decades until his demise in 2015. Rowohlt's foray into the entertainment industry began with his work in the theater during the late 1960s, where he performed as an actor, director, and playwright. He later gained popularity for his translations of English works into German, including the popular children's book "Winnie-the-Pooh" by A.A. Milne. His translation of "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger also gained a lot of acclaim in Germany.

Apart from his theater and translation work, Rowohlt was also known for his contributions to German television shows. From 1985 until the mid-90s, he worked as a writer and actor for the satirical TV show "Loriot." He also hosted several shows, including "Harry's lieferservice" and "Die Harald Schmidt Show," both of which showcased his humor and wit.

Throughout his career, Rowohlt won several awards, including the Golden Camera award for best entertainment program in 1996 and the Order of Merit of the State of Hamburg in 2009. He also published several books, including "Das Glück von Shangri-La" and "Harry Rowohlt liest."
