He was born on December 12, 1917, in Livorno, Italy. Olmi began his career as a film editor in the 1940s, working on a number of neorealist films. He then went on to become a successful director himself, creating award-winning films such as "Il Posto," "La Cotta," and "Lunga Vita alla Signora." Olmi's films were known for their realism and their commentary on Italian society. He often used non-professional actors, which added to the authenticity of his work. His films were also known for their use of long takes, which allowed the audience to become fully immersed in the story. Olmi's work was highly respected in Italy and around the world. He won numerous awards throughout his career, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for "Il Posto." He was also awarded the Grand Prix at Cannes for "L'arbre aux sabots," which is considered to be one of his masterpieces. In addition to his work in film, Olmi was also a writer.
