Grigori Aleksandrov

Grigori Aleksandrov Bio

Grigori Aleksandrov is a renowned film director, actor, and screenwriter from Russia. He was born on the 23rd of February 1903 in Ekaterinoslav (now Dnipro), Ukraine. Aleksandrov studied law at Moscow State University, but his true passion lay in film-making. He began his career in the film industry as an extra in the silent film "The Extraordinary Adventures of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviks" in 1924. In 1926, Grigori Aleksandrov collaborated with Sergei Eisenstein on his famous film, "Battleship Potemkin". Eisenstein greatly admired Aleksandrov's talents and was impressed by his knowledge of music, which he incorporated into his work. The two went on to collaborate on several other films, including "Strike", "Old and New", and "October: Ten Days That Shook the World". Aleksandrov's most significant work was perhaps "The Circus," which he directed and co-wrote with Eisenstein. The film was shot in Hollywood, and Aleksandrov's use of sound, music, and camera work was revolutionary. It was the first film to win an Academy Award (for Best Original Score) without being nominated in any other category. Aleksandrov also wrote and directed several other notable films, including "Volga-Volga" and "Tsirk," which were highly praised for their comedic elements and musical scores. In addition to his work in film-making, Grigori Aleksandrov was also a renowned conductor and composer. He was a member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and Arts and was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Stalin Prize for his contributions to the film industry in Russia. Aleksandrov passed away on the 16th of July 1983 in Moscow, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most significant figures in Russian cinema history.
