Ivan Bortnik was a Russian actor who had a successful career in both theatre and film. Born on December 11, 1939, in Moscow, Bortnik was raised in a creative environment which inspired him to pursue his career in the entertainment industry. He graduated from the State Institute of Theatre Arts in Moscow in 1962 and joined the famous Moscow Art Theatre as an actor. He became one of Russia's foremost actors and received numerous accolades for his contributions to the field of theatre. In addition to his career in theatre, Bortnik was also popularly known for his roles in Russian cinema. He began his movie career in 1966 with the film “Liberation” in which he played the role of Sergey. He went on to act in numerous other films, including “The Magician,” “The Old New Year,” and “A Distant Journey.” He won the Best Actor award at the 35th International Film Festival in San Sebastian for his role in the film “Stride of the Soviet.” Bortnik was a highly respected figure in the Russian entertainment industry, but he was also known for his activism. He was a strong advocate for human rights, and he supported the idea of freedom of speech and expression. In 1989 he signed an appeal to the government, demanding an end to censorship in Soviet theatres. He was highly regarded for his community service and was often seen participating in events that aimed at promoting Russian culture and tradition. Sadly, Ivan Bortnik passed away on June 9, 2019, at the age of 79. He left behind a legacy of excellent work and contribution to the advancement of Russian cinema and theatre. His dedication to human rights, freedom of speech, and community service made him an inspiration to many young talents in the industry.
