Tom Alter was an Indian actor and film director of American descent, widely celebrated for his contributions to the Indian film industry. Born on June 22, 1950, in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, Alter grew up in a multicultural environment as his father was American and mother Indian. He completed his education from Woodstock School in Mussoorie and then went on to study at Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, Maharashtra. Alter's unique blend of Indian and Western heritage allowed him to effortlessly portray diverse characters throughout his career.

Alter started his acting journey in the late 1970s and soon became a notable figure in the Indian film fraternity. He was known for his versatility, effortlessly transitioning between various genres and languages. He predominantly worked in Hindi cinema but also appeared in other regional language films such as Bengali, Assamese, and Telugu. His remarkable acting skills earned him critical acclaim and a loyal fan base.

Apart from films, Alter also made his mark in the television industry. He became a household name with his popular role in the television series "Zabaan Sambhalke" (1993), a Hindi adaptation of the British sitcom "Mind Your Language." He also starred in other memorable TV shows like "Junoon" and "Bharat Ek Khoj." Alter's rich baritone voice, combined with his impeccable diction, lent itself well to his successful career in voice-over work and dubbing for both Indian and foreign films.
