Christian Millau Bio

Christian Millau was a renowned French gastronomic journalist and restaurant critic who made significant contributions to the world of cuisine. He was born on December 30, 1928, in Paris, France, and grew up to become one of the most influential figures in the French culinary scene. Millau co-founded the prestigious Gault-Millau restaurant guide, which revolutionized the way food criticism was approached and, in turn, shaped the fine dining landscape in France and beyond.

Millau's passion for food and dining started from a young age. He studied law and economics but quickly realized that his true calling was in the world of gastronomy. In the 1950s, he began his career as a food writer, journalist, and critic, contributing to various publications. However, it was his partnership with Henri Gault in 1969 that truly put Millau on the map.

Together, Millau and Gault founded Gault-Millau, a renowned restaurant guide that quickly gained recognition for its innovative approach to rating and reviewing establishments. Unlike traditional guides that focused solely on ambiance and service, Gault-Millau placed a greater emphasis on the food itself. They introduced the concept of rating restaurants on a scale of 20, with 20 being the highest score, and awarded points based on the quality and creativity of the cuisine.

Under Millau's guidance, Gault-Millau became the go-to authority for chefs, diners, and culinary professionals alike. The guide gave new chefs and avant-garde cooking styles a platform, boosting their careers and introducing fresh perspectives to the culinary world. Millau's critiques were respected and widely read, and his influence helped shape many restaurants' destinies.

Throughout his career, Christian Millau played a pivotal role in elevating French cuisine to its highest levels of acclaim and recognition. His work helped foster innovation, individuality, and an appreciation for culinary artistry.
