James Edwards is a prominent American basketball player and coach. He was born on November 22, 1965, in Seattle, Washington, USA. Edwards is widely known for his smooth shooting touch and skilled post moves, making him a go-to scorer during his playing days. Due to his impressive performance on the court, Edwards was inducted into the Seattle Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
Edwards began his professional playing career in 1989 when he was drafted in the first round as the 20th overall pick by the Los Angeles Lakers. Before joining Lakers, he played college basketball at the University of Washington. Over his 19-year career in the NBA, Edwards played for a number of teams, including the Phoenix Suns, Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls, and Miami Heat. During his stint with the Pistons, he helped the team secure two NBA championships in 1989 and 1990.
After retiring from basketball, Edwards became an assistant coach with the New Orleans Hornets in 2004. He later worked as an assistant coach for several NBA franchises including the Orlando Magic, Washington Wizards, and Brooklyn Nets. In 2011, he was promoted to associate head coach with the Wizards where he served until 2016. Edwards also worked as the head coach for the NBA G League team, the Texas Legends from 2017 to 2020 before taking a hiatus from coaching.
In addition to his professional career, Edwards made significant contributions to his community. He established the James Edwards Foundation in 1994, which provides scholarships and support to young people in need. Edwards also served as a mentor and role model to many young basketball players. He remains a popular figure in the basketball world and is regarded as one of the most skilled post players of his era.
