Joe DeRita, born Joseph Wardell on July 12, 1909, was an American actor and comedian best known for his role as "Curly Joe" in the Three Stooges comedy team. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, DeRita's career spanned over six decades, leaving an indelible mark on the world of comedy. With his distinctive bald head, childlike mannerisms, and slapstick humor, DeRita became as beloved in the comedy world as his predecessors, Curly Howard and Shemp Howard.
Joe DeRita began his career in entertainment in the 1920s as a burlesque comedian. He honed his comedic skills by performing in vaudeville and working with various comedy groups. In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a corporal in World War II. After his discharge, DeRita continued his comedy career, paving the way for his eventual role in the Three Stooges in 1958.
In 1959, DeRita joined the Three Stooges after the retirement of comedian Joe Besser. He became the sixth member of the troupe and portrayed the childlike and simple-minded "Curly Joe" character. DeRita's addition revitalized the group, and he appeared in numerous short films, TV appearances, and a full-length feature film titled "The Three Stooges Meet Hercules" (1962). His tenure with the Three Stooges lasted until their retirement in 1970.
Following the retirement of the Three Stooges, Joe DeRita continued to make occasional appearances in television shows and commercials. For many fans, DeRita's portrayal of Curly Joe was a welcome addition to the iconic comedy trio, and he brought his unique brand of humor and physical comedy to a new generation.
