Charles Follis Bio

Charles Follis, known as the "Black Cyclone," was not your typical celebrity. Born on February 3, 1879, in Wooster, Ohio, Follis became the first African American professional football player in the United States. His legacy as a trailblazer in the sport, pioneering opportunities for Black athletes, goes far beyond his athletic achievements. Follis's journey to football stardom began in the early 1900s when he joined the Wooster Athletic Association (WAA) football team. Despite facing racial prejudice and discrimination, Follis showcased his remarkable talent as a skilled running back and soon became a local sensation. His performances attracted attention from major football teams in Ohio, and it didn't take long for Follis to step onto a bigger stage. In 1903, Follis was recruited by the Shelby Blues, a prominent professional football team. This groundbreaking move cemented his place in history as the first Black professional football player. Follis's tremendous skill, speed, and agility on the field quickly established him as a key player for the Blues, making him a household name in the football world. However, Follis's groundbreaking career was cut short tragically at the young age of 31. In 1910, he suffered a fatal accident while working at a local factory in Shelby, Ohio. Follis's untimely death shocked the sports community, robbing the world of a remarkable athlete who played a pivotal role in breaking racial barriers in American football. Charles Follis paved the way for future generations of Black athletes, demolishing the racial barriers that had long relegated them to the sidelines. While his life may have been short-lived, his impact and contribution to American football and the civil rights movement will forever be remembered. Today, Charles Follis stands as a symbol of resilience, bravery, and determination for aspiring athletes of all backgrounds, inspiring generations to never back down from pursuing their dreams.
