Cliff Stoudt

Cliff Stoudt Bio

Cliff Stoudt, born Clifford Lewis Stoudt Jr., is a former professional American football quarterback. He was born on March 27, 1955, in Horseheads, New York, and grew up with a passion for the sport. Stoudt achieved prominence during his college years at Youngstown State University, where he showcased his skills as a talented quarterback. This success led him to be selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round of the 1977 NFL Draft. With the Steelers, Stoudt served as a reliable backup quarterback to the legendary Terry Bradshaw. He patiently awaited his opportunities and made the most of them, stepping in whenever Bradshaw was injured. In his backup role, Stoudt showed glimpses of his own talent and ability, earning the respect of his teammates and coaches alike. However, Stoudt's biggest opportunity came during the 1983 NFL season when Bradshaw suffered a season-ending injury. As the starting quarterback, he led the Steelers to an impressive 9-4 record and a division championship. Stoudt's contributions played a crucial role in the team's success, showcasing his abilities as a capable leader and playmaker. Despite his success as a starting quarterback, Stoudt's time in the limelight was short-lived. The emergence of the young and talented rookie quarterback, Mark Malone, ultimately led to Stoudt's departure from the Steelers in 1984. He went on to play for other NFL teams, including the St. Louis Cardinals, Phoenix Cardinals, and Miami Dolphins, before retiring in 1988. Throughout his career, Cliff Stoudt exhibited a talent for the game and a strong work ethic that gained him recognition amongst his peers. Despite not achieving the same level of fame as some of his contemporaries, Stoudt's contributions to NFL teams were invaluable. Today, he is remembered as a reliable and trustworthy quarterback who always rose to the occasion when called upon.
