Danny Greene

Danny Greene Bio

Danny Greene, known as the "Irishman," was an influential figure in the organized crime world in the United States during the 1970s. Born on November 14, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio, Greene grew up in a working-class Irish-American community. Despite a challenging upbringing, he possessed an astute business sense that would eventually lead him to become a prominent figure within the Cleveland Mafia. Danny Greene's rise to fame and power began in the 1960s when he joined the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) Local 1317. He quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the local president. His charismatic personality and ability to rally the workers earned him a loyal following. However, lurked beneath his apparent labor organizer persona was a dark side that dabbled in criminal activities. During his time with the ILA, Greene became embroiled in conflicts with the Cleveland Mafia led by James Licavoli and his crew. These clashes were centered around control over the lucrative waterfront rackets. Greene, who had personal and ideological differences with Licavoli, ultimately formed an alliance with a rival mob group, the Italian-American Mafia from New York, headed by John Nardi. Danny Greene's defiance and refusal to comply with the demands of the traditional Mafia hierarchy sparked a wave of violence and a bloody gang war in Cleveland. Greene managed to survive numerous assassination attempts, further enhancing his reputation as a formidable and resourceful figure. His defiance of the traditional Italian-American Mafia made him a symbol of rebellion and resilience in the face of organized crime. However, Danny Greene's luck ultimately ran out. On October 6, 1977, he was killed by a car bomb outside his dentist's office. His death brought an end to an era of turbulence and marked the eventual demise of the John Nardi-led criminal organization. Despite his criminal activities, Greene's legacy remains as a fascinating figure who stood up against the traditional power structures of organized crime and left an indelible mark on the seedy underworld of the United States.
