Dick Felt was an American football player who made a name for himself primarily as a safety. Born on September 29, 1930, in Russellville, Alabama, Felt's professional career began in the late 1950s and spanned over a decade. While he may not be as well-known as some of the other football players of his time, Felt's impact on the sport, particularly in the American Football League (AFL), should not be overlooked. Felt's journey to the professional ranks began at Brigham Young University, where he played college football as a defensive back. After completing his college career, he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the 18th round of the 1953 NFL Draft. However, Felt decided to take his talents to Canada to play for the Edmonton Eskimos in the Western Interprovincial Football Union (WIFU), the predecessor to the Canadian Football League. Felt's playing career truly took off when he joined the Boston Patriots of the American Football League in 1960. As a safety, he quickly established himself as a hard-hitting and intelligent player on the Patriots' defense. Felt was known for his excellent instincts and ability to read plays, making him a formidable force in the backfield. His contributions were instrumental in helping the Patriots reach their first-ever AFL Championship game in 1963. Although Felt retired from professional football after the 1966 season, his impact extended beyond his playing years. Following his retirement, he turned his attention to coaching and worked for several years as an assistant coach for various high school and college teams. Dick Felt's dedication to the sport and his contribution to the Patriots' early success in the AFL should be recognized as a significant part of American football history.
