Ed Lee
Ed Lee Bio
Ed Lee, also known as Edwin Mah "Ed" Lee, was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 43rd Mayor of San Francisco, California. Born on May 5, 1952, in Seattle, Washington, Lee's parents were immigrants from Toisan, Guangdong, China. Growing up in Seattle's Beacon Hill neighborhood, he was the youngest of six children in his family. Lee's educational pursuits brought him to the University of Washington, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in 1974, and later to the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley.
Before venturing into politics, Lee had an accomplished legal career. After graduating from law school in 1978, he worked as a civil rights attorney at the Asian Law Caucus, a nonprofit organization promoting the legal rights of Asian Pacific American communities. He then served as the managing attorney for the San Francisco-based nonprofit organization, the San Francisco Asian Law Caucus, from 1989 to 1991. In these roles, he fought tirelessly for the rights and equal treatment of minority groups, gaining widespread respect and recognition in the process.
Lee's entrance into politics came in 1989 when he was appointed by San Francisco Mayor Art Agnos to serve as the head of the city's purchasing department. Demonstrating his commitment to public service, Lee played a pivotal role in reforming the department and improving its efficiency. This success paved the way for his appointed positions as the Director of Human Rights Commission, Director of City Purchasing, and City Administrator, where he oversaw various government departments and spearheaded numerous initiatives to enhance public services.
However, it was in 2011 that Lee achieved his most notable milestone when he became the first Asian American mayor of San Francisco, succeeding Gavin Newsom. Recognized for his progressive policies and his relentless dedication to improving the lives of San Francisco residents, Lee successfully won reelection in 2015. Throughout his tenure as mayor, he prioritized affordable housing, public education, and economic development, aiming to create a city that was more inclusive and equitable for all its residents.
Sadly, Ed Lee's life was cut short on December 12, 2017, when he passed away unexpectedly at the age of 65. His sudden death left a void in San Francisco politics and marked the end of an era for the city. Ed Lee will be remembered as a trailblazing figure, a champion for civil rights, and a dedicated public servant who made a lasting impact on the community he served.
