Edwin W. Lee

Edwin W. Lee Bio

Edwin W. Lee was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 43rd mayor of San Francisco, USA. Born on May 5, 1952, in Seattle, Washington, Lee was the son of Chinese immigrants. He grew up in the Beacon Hill neighborhood and attended Franklin High School. Lee went on to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Bowdoin College in Maine and later obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Lee's political career began in the early 1990s when he joined the administration of San Francisco Mayor Art Agnos as a civil rights attorney. He steadily rose through the ranks and held various positions in city government, including director of the city's Human Rights Commission and executive director of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission. Lee's dedication to championing civil rights and tackling inequality earned him a stellar reputation among both colleagues and constituents. Lee's most significant achievement came in 2011 when he was appointed mayor of San Francisco following the resignation of Gavin Newsom. He became the city's first Asian American mayor, and his tenure was characterized by a focus on economic development, advocating for affordable housing, and improving transportation infrastructure. Lee was praised for his efforts to revitalize neglected neighborhoods, attract tech companies, and promote innovation in the city's economy. Under his leadership, San Francisco experienced a period of economic growth and increased employment opportunities. Tragically, Lee's life was cut short when he passed away on December 12, 2017, at the age of 65. His untimely death shocked the San Francisco community, and he was widely mourned for his dedication to public service and his tireless efforts to improve the lives of its residents. Edwin W. Lee's legacy as a trailblazing Asian American leader and his contributions to the city of San Francisco will forever be remembered.
