Elijah Pitts was an American professional football player who gained recognition for his contributions to the National Football League (NFL). Born on February 3, 1938, in Mayflower, Arkansas, Pitts rose to fame as a talented running back who showcased his skills predominantly with the Green Bay Packers. Throughout his career, he established himself as a reliable and versatile player, helping the Packers achieve numerous victories and contributing to their legendary success under the guidance of renowned coach Vince Lombardi.
After completing high school, Pitts attended Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he was a standout athlete. Excelling in both football and track, he caught the attention of professional scouts with his exceptional skills and speed. Pitts' stellar performance led to his selection by the Green Bay Packers in the 13th round of the 1961 NFL Draft.
Pitts quickly made an impact in the NFL by showcasing his versatility on the field. Although primarily utilized as a running back, he also displayed his ability to catch passes and contribute to the team's success through excellent blocking. The running back played a vital role in the Packers' unprecedented three consecutive NFL championships from 1965 to 1967, including the first two Super Bowls.
Despite facing competition from other talented players on the team, Pitts established himself as a reliable and consistent performer throughout his career. He spent nine seasons with the Packers before joining the New Orleans Saints for his final season in 1971. Over the course of his career, Pitts amassed 3,285 rushing yards, 18 rushing touchdowns, and 1,209 receiving yards.
After retiring from football, Elijah Pitts remained involved with the sport, serving as an assistant coach for several teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills. Known for his leadership qualities and deep knowledge of the game, Pitts contributed to the development of future NFL stars, earning admiration and respect from players and coaches alike.
