Fred Cole
Fred Cole Bio
Fred Cole was an influential American musician and songwriter known for his contributions to the punk rock scene. Born on August 28, 1948, in Tacoma, Washington, Cole's musical journey spanned several decades as he explored various genres, leaving an indelible mark on the alternative music landscape. However, he is primarily recognized for his work as the frontman for the famed punk band Dead Moon, which he formed with his wife, Toody Cole, and drummer Andrew Loomis in 1987. Cole's raw vocals, gritty guitar playing, and DIY approach to music epitomized the punk ethos, making him a revered figure in the underground punk community.
Despite his importance in the punk scene, Fred Cole's musical journey began much earlier. In the late 1960s, he formed the psychedelic rock band called The Lollipop Shoppe, which gained some recognition with their single "You Must Be a Witch." The band released an eponymous album that showcased Cole's emerging songwriting skills and guitar work. However, following the band's dissolution, Cole embarked on a musical hiatus before resurfacing in the late 1970s as a member of the punk band The Rats, which also included his future wife Toody.
Cole's career gained momentum with the formation of Dead Moon, a band renowned for their stripped-down sound and unwavering commitment to their craft. The band's record label, Tombstone Records, was founded by Cole and Toody and became a platform for not only publishing Dead Moon's music but also for promoting other punk and garage rock bands. Cole's musicianship in Dead Moon attracted a dedicated following, and the band's live performances were characterized by an explosive energy that captivated audiences.
Fred Cole's impact on the music industry extends beyond his work with Dead Moon. Throughout his career, he released numerous albums and collaborated with various artists, including notable contributions to the Portland punk scene. His influence can be heard in the work of countless punk and alternative rock bands who have been inspired by his DIY ethos and passionate delivery. Sadly, Cole passed away on November 9, 2017, leaving behind a legacy of raw, unrelenting punk music that continues to resonate with new generations of music enthusiasts.
