After a stellar college career, Riemersma was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round of the 1996 NFL Draft. Although he initially played as a backup tight end, his consistently impressive performances quickly earned him a spot in the starting lineup. Riemersma played for the Bills from 1996 to 2002 and had an impact as a reliable receiver and dependable blocker. His rapport with quarterback Doug Flutie particularly stood out, and the duo achieved significant success together.

In 2003, Riemersma signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he continued to showcase his skills as a tight end.
