Jim Dickey
Jim Dickey Bio
Jim Dickey, born James Richard Dickey, was an American poet, novelist, and professor, best known for his novel "Deliverance" which garnered widespread acclaim. He was born on February 2, 1923, in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up in a conservative southern household. Dickey's literary contributions were instrumental in shaping the post-World War II American poetry movement.
Dickey served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a radar operator, an experience that greatly influenced his writing. After the war, he attended Vanderbilt University where he received his Bachelor's degree in English. He then went on to receive his Master's degree from Vanderbilt's Graduate English Program.
Dickey's career as a professor started at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he taught English for several years before moving to the University of Florida as a lecturer. His true literary breakthrough occurred in 1966 with the publication of his novel "Deliverance," a gripping and harrowing tale of survival and masculinity set in the Southern wilderness. The novel was later adapted into a highly successful film by director John Boorman in 1972.
Throughout his career, Dickey received numerous accolades for his work. He was appointed as the Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1966 to 1968, and in 1970, he was awarded the National Book Award for his poetry collection "Buckdancer's Choice." Dickey also received fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Institute of Arts and Letters.
Jim Dickey's writing has been celebrated for its lyrical and powerful portrayals of nature, masculinity, and the human experience. His work often delves into topics such as war, mortality, and the complexities of the human psyche. Despite his significant contribution to American literature, Jim Dickey's legacy is sometimes overshadowed by controversies surrounding his personal behavior and alleged misconduct. Nevertheless, his impact on the literary world remains undeniable, and he continues to be remembered as a celebrated poet and novelist.
