He was born on December 5, 1981, in Vallejo, California, and grew up with a passion for sports. Grootegoed made a name for himself as a standout athlete at Bishop O'Dowd High School, earning recognition for his skills in both football and basketball. After an impressive high school career, Grootegoed went on to play college football for the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans.
